Press release, 02.12.2024.
The statistical classification of economic activities (TEÁOR) will change next year
HCSO changes the main activity code
On 1 January 2025, the new version of the European classification of economic activities, NACE Rev. 2.1, will enter into force in the European Union, and in Hungary the corresponding TEÁOR'25 (the Standard Classification of Economic Activities). The current classification has been in use since 2008, and the change is mainly justified by the technology driven evolution and restructuring of the economy. TEÁOR'25 includes a number of modifications, several new codes have been added, while maintaining the structure of the classification and consistency with international, world-wide economic classifications has been an important objective. In order to reduce the administrative burden on business organisations, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office will set the new TEÁOR main activity code for each organisation.
The TEÁOR (in EU terminology: NACE - Nomenclature Générale des Activités Economiques dans les Communautés Européennes/Statistical classification of economic activities in the European Community) is a compulsory national standard harmonised at EU level for defining and classifying the activities of business organisations for the purposes of official and other administrative data collection, national and international statistics and analysis. Since the introduction of the current TEÁOR'08 in 2008, the world has changed a lot and, as a consequence, so have the activities carried out in the economy. For example, the production of electricity from renewable sources and the activity of internet search portals have gained in importance, while the relevance of other activities, such as the rental of video cassettes, has declined. In order to ensure that economic phenomena can continue to be accurately characterised, TEÁOR should also be updated regularly as part of a coherent process at EU level. TEÁOR'25 is the new domestic edition of the statistical classification of economic activities, which will enter into force on 1 January 2025, replacing TEÁOR'08, in line with the practice in EU Member States. Business organisations are obliged to change their activity code as a consequence of the changeover.
In order to reduce the administrative burden on business organisations, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) will set the new TEÁOR main activity code for each organisation. The new main activity codes will be transmitted by the HCSO to the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) and, for budgetary bodies, to the Hungarian State Treasury. From 31 January 2025, all registers will contain the new TEÁOR'25 main activity codes. The main activity codes in force can be accessed through the statistical code enquirer. If a business organisation does not accept the main activity code offered to it, it can initiate a modification of the code free of charge at the NAV until 1 July 2025. Budgetary bodies can initiate amendments at the Hungarian State Treasury, also until 1 July 2025.
