A "What do we live from?" survey to start soon
HCSO will survey 15 thousand households by the end of the year
This year, for the fourth time, Hungary is participating in the survey on the living conditions of households, which will be launched on 1 September. The triennial survey is conducted by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO).
The " What do we live from?" survey, coordinated by the European Central Bank, is mandatory for euro area Member States, while Hungary joined the programme voluntarily in 2014. The primary aim of the survey is to provide comparable data on household wealth at European level. The main aim of the survey is to provide analyses that can make a significant contribution to effective economic policy decisions at national and European level. The questionnaire asks households about their liabilities (debt, loans, credits), and the real assets (real estate, vehicles, valuables) and financial assets they own (bank accounts, investments, pension savings).
Before the survey begins, HCSO sends a postal invitation letter to the more than 15,000 households selected for voluntary and anonymous responses using mathematical-statistical methods.
The fieldwork will take place between 1 September and 18 December 2023. In the first phase, between 1 September and 30 September, the questionnaire can be completed exclusively online. This is the easiest, fastest and most convenient way to respond. In the second phase, from 1 October to 18 December, surveyors will visit households that have not made use of the online option. It takes on average 20 minutes to answer the questions.
The European Central Bank collects the data from the countries participating in the survey, and the HCSO and the National Bank of Hungary will publish aggregated data from the results in 2025.
The information collected during the data collection will be treated confidentially by the HCSO in accordance with the relevant national and international legislation, used exclusively for statistical purposes and published only in aggregate form.
