Results of the 2022 Census on maps

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) conducted the 16th Census of Hungary in the fall of 2022. Regional breakdown, owing to full-scope data collection may be the greatest value of the census data. The recently published HCSO Census Atlas (Népszámlálási atlasz) displays through maps particularities of individual counties, districts and settlements by using data of the 2022 and earlier censuses, and offers detailed territorial mapping of the social state and living conditions of Hungary’s population. Brief texts assist in understanding the maps.

The HCSO publication entitled Census Atlas (Népszámlálási atlasz) regarding - primarily - the 2022 Census results, shown on maps, has been released. The volume presents on over 160 pages, about 140 suggestive maps and added explanations the regional characteristics of Hungary as well as their changes over time compared to previous censuses, in county, district and settlement level breakdowns in eight categories (demography, education, labour and employment, nationalities, religion, health, families and households, housing).

One may learn, for example, that educational attainment further increased: 22 percent of the population aged 14 and over had a degree in 2022. Language skills of the population improved significantly, too, English being the most widespread foreign language, spoken by a quarter of the population, surpassing the 2011 data by 53 percent. The chapter dealing with labour market reveals that employment went notably up in the decade following 2010, while the number of those unemployed halved, at the same time labour demand underwent changes due to technological developments, activities requiring high qualifications as well as low labour cost, simple tasks executing ones coming in the foreground, while demand for those performing automatized duties decreased. We learn on housing in Hungary that 4.6 million dwellings existed in 2022, over one-third of these built between 1960 and 1980. 1.2 million dwellings had air conditioning, 76 thousand had ground and air source heat pump and solar panels have been installed on close to 180 thousand dwellings. The chapter dealing with demographic trends reveals that the natural decrease of the population was the lowest in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and in Pest counties, and in Békés county the highest, during the period between the two latest censuses. Pest county gained the most regarding migration processes, while Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county was the weakest in population retention.
