Prizes for the Buday László statistical essay and short story competition have been handed over

Prizes for the Buday László statistical essay and short story competition have been handed over on 25 October 2024 at the main building of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO). Organizers pre-defined the writings’ topics, this year’s contest, called by the HCSO, the Csányi Foundation, the Hungarian Statistical Association and the Local History Society, took place for the second time.

Promoting statistical literacy among users, especially young people is a goal of the HCSO of strategic importance. Contests and competitions organized by the Office for students, like the Buday László statistical essay and short story competition, held for the second time, in memory of the former HCSO director, scientist, academician and university professor, serve this very purpose.

The fact that the first statistical Act of Hungary came into force 150 years ago, in 1874, gave the idea of the contest announced in June 2024. Organizers expected higher education students to hand in statistical essays, while the short story competition segment targeted secondary level (classes 5-13) students.

Based on the assessment of the professional jury the winner of the essay contest was the work of Zsombor Barkóczy entitled „Using data from administraive and private sources in domestic statistics – a brief review of the use of statistical data in Hungary.”

Final results of the short story contest are:

1st place: Maja Sas, short story entitled Felismerés (Recognition)

2nd place: Melinda Jakab, short story entitled Remény (Hope)

3rd place: Letícia Domján, short story entitled A háború, ami tönkretette az életem (The War that Destroyed my Life)
