Using new data sources in statistics

An international scientific conference is organised at HCSO

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) hosted an international conference. The occasion of the event entitled "Using new data sources in statistics" was the European Statistics Day, which is celebrated every year on 20 October by the European statistical community. In addition to internationally recognised experts, the conference also featured speeches by eminent national representatives of the profession. The event ended with a round table discussion.

On 18 October 2024, a scientific conference on "Using new data sources in statistics" was held at the headquarters of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office in Budapest. The theme of the event is timely in international terms, too, as digitisation has made more and more data available in various databases, the efficient use of which for statistical purposes can increase the accuracy and relevance of data reporting, while creating new opportunities for better understanding and forecasting of social and economic processes, and can also replace traditional questionnaire-based data collection.

The event was opened by Dénes Ádám, Deputy President of HCSO, and then Mariana Kotzeva, Director-General of Eurostat greeted the participants in the form of a video message. After that, nine presentations were delivered, elucidating the theme of the conference from different perspectives. First, Mr Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, gave the keynote speech, followed by Mrs Apolonija Oblak Flander, Director General of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, who shared the Slovenian experience on the subject.

In the further part of the professional programme, Kornélia Mag, Vice President of the Hungarian Statistical Society, Dr. Sergey Vinogradov, Head of the Institute for Digital Studies of Budapest Metropolitan University, Dr. Csaba Szomolai, Vice President of the State Audit Office of Hungary, Zoltán Matyóka, President of the Association of Hungarian Certified Public Accountants, Dr. László Kovács, President of the Public Procurement Authority of Hungary, Viktor Jáger, Head of the Methodology Department of HCSO and Zoltán Csányi, expert of HCSO gave a presentation. The event was closed by a round table discussion on the use of data in private hands for statistical purposes and the words of Dr. Áron Kincses, President of HCSO.

The European Statistics Day, initiated by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), has been celebrated by the statistical community on 20 October each year since 2016 with the aim of raising awareness of the values of official statistics.
