The Hungarian Central Statistical Office organises the most significant statistical conference of the European Union for the second time

The European Union’s number one statistical forum, DGINS 2017 conference, will meet in Budapest on 20–21 September. The host of the event is the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. Participants at DGINS (Directeurs Généraux des Instituts Nationaux de Statistique) are the members of the European Statistical System (ESS): presidents of national statistical offices of the European Union and representatives of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as well as the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the UN Economic Commission for Europe and the OECD.

This year there are statistical aspects of international migration in the forefront of the conference, namely, in this area substantial developments are required in statistical data collection and in the methodology of processing them as well as in complex statistical analysis. The aim of the conference is to find solutions to these problems from scientific, methodological as well as practical points of view.

DGINS has a history of many decades: the first conference was held in Luxembourg in 1953, since when the conference has been held every year in one of the EU member states. This year’s event is attended by about 120 guests.

The objectives and tasks of DGINS were provided by the Statistical Programme Committee of the European Union in November 2000. Accordingly, the most important objectives of DGINS are the following:

  • to define and discuss the strategic tasks of statistical activity,
  • to identify current issues within the European Statistical System and put them on the agenda,
  • to present the statistical system of the organising country.
