Time-use survey is drawing to its close

About 40 thousand people have been called upon to complete the survey, with 7 April as deadline

Less than one month remained for those called upon to complete the time-use survey of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), as the deadline is 7 April 2025; the survey involves 264 settlements of Hungary. The Office approached the randomly, by statistical procedures, selected participants through a letter of request sent by post. Participation is anonymous and voluntary. Those completing the questionnaire receive gift coupons.

After fifteen years the Hungarian Central Statistical Office is conducting once again a time-use survey. Data collection, based on international recommendations, is involving 264 settlements of Hungary. The Office is approaching the randomly, by statistical procedures, selected participants through a letter of request sent by post. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Field work started on 8 April 2024 and will soon come to an end, on 8 April 2025.

Respondents are requested, beside filling in the background questionnaire regarding socio-economic topics, to keep a diary, enlisting in an itemized way all their activities during a given day. Responding may take the form of online self-completing as well as with the assistance of a questioner. Those completing the questionnaire receive gift coupons. The HCSO is sending by post for those completing individually the online questionnaire a ticket of purchase worth of 10 000 HUF, for those responding with the assistance of a questioner or by phone a 5 000 HUF ticket.

The survey aims to provide spatially and timely comparable data regarding the time-use of the population. One may learn from the information provided by the survey about the impact on individuals’ time-use of social, economic changes that occurred during the last 15 years. Another goal of the research is to provide up-to-date data in order to support family-policy related decisions, to assist in shaping work time regulation policies, to offer information about ways and destinations of travel, to offer insight in changes of cultural and leisure activities, to support national accounts related developments, primarily by quantifying so-called invisible work, performed, in unpaid way, within households.
