Doors Open Days at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office
On 20-21 September 2014, the "Palace of Statistics," the headquarters of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office will open its doors in the framework of the Cultural Heritage Days event. The speciality of our Headquarters located at 5-7 Keleti Károly u. is that it is one of the few purpose-built buildings still in its original use. The idea of an independent statistical agency had been raised in 1844, however, the initiative was swept away by history. The foundation of HCSO finally took place in 1867. The eclectic headquarters was finally completed in 1898 based on the plans of Győző Czigler.
During their visit in the building, visitors, among others, can get a glimpse of the president’s study, and gain an insight into the publication of GDP data, which are confidential until the last moment. The library of the institution containing 850 thousand publications will also open its doors.
During the weekend, an exhibition of statistical curiosities will await our visitors, in which a separate section will be devoted to World War I, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its outbreak, as well as to the 10 years of our EU membership. In the framework of a detective game those interested can find out a mystery nestled among the statistical data as well. Anyone can try out our visualization techniques, and become a statistician for a few minutes. In addition, there will be a game corner and a discount book fair; furthermore "non-prescription data” may also be acquired by the visitors.
Those visiting the library may become familiar with the reading rooms, the movable book shelves in the library’s compact storage area and the exquisite office of the director general; browse old maps and once classified documents; furthermore join the library for a discounted charge. Younger children may spend their time with children’s books, colouring books and preparing do-it-yourself bookmarks.
Opening hours: from 20 to 21 September 2014, on Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Guided tour through the building: in every half hour on both days: the first walk will start at 9 a.m. and the last one at 2 p.m.
Guided tour in English: at 2:15 p.m. on both days
