HCSO takes another step towards register-based population statistics

Co-funded by the European UnionThe Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) has completed a European Union project on the development of population statistics. Under the SMP ESS programme, we have been experimenting with new methods to produce census-type data using only register data in the future, in line with the new European Statistics on Population (ESOP) Regulation. The pilot datasets produced now rely heavily on data from domestic registers, primarily the "administrative footprints" of the population, and the longitudinal register information needed to to assess the duration of stay in Hungary. The results of the project not only provide the basis for future censuses based on administrative data, but also meet the definition criteria of the European Regulation on Population Statistics, thus improving the comparability of Hungarian population statistics at EU level.
