Data and trends – advanced statistics – Presentations by experts from HCSO at the BUEB course, 31/03/2025

At a project day organised by the Budapest University of Economics and Business (BUEB), lectures were given by experts from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO). During the event, which took place for the tenth time on 27 March 2025 in the framework of the Statistics for Advanced Learners course, participants could listen to lectures on macro-level agricultural statistics, global population trends, the characteristics of people living alone in Hungary, and the demographic situation in our country. The event provided an excellent opportunity for a deeper understanding of statistical methods and applications, and for strengthening professional dialogue.

For the tenth time, the Department of Applied Quantitative Methods of the Faculty of Finance and Accountancy of the BUEB organised the course Statistics for Advanced Learners, which traditionally involves HCSO staff providing an in-depth introduction to the statistical subfields. The aim of the course, which took place on 27 March 2025, was to consolidate statistical and methodological knowledge, to demonstrate the practical application of theoretical knowledge, to explore the professional background of the choice among quantitative analysis methods, while participants were also given an insight into current topics in economic and social statistics.

On the project day, Zsuzsanna Horváth Keményné Dr., Head of the Publishing Department of the HCSO, gave a presentation on Macro-level economic statistics in agriculture, which presented the characteristics of the structural transformation of the economy in the last decade. Géza Novák, Head of the Complex and Primary Analyses Department, presented global population trends, highlighting the factors that most influence current and future trends, such as the demographic crisis in ageing developed societies or the impact of international migration. The presentation of Katalin Kása, Head of the User Relations Department and Angéla Kátainé Marosi, Statistical Adviser of the HCSO, entitled People living alone in Hungary, detailed the characteristics of single person households by sex, age group, marital status, educational attainment, economic activity and spatial distribution, highlighting the international context in addition to the domestic data. Marcell Kovács, head of the Demographic Statistics Department, in his presentation on the demographic situation in Hungary, mainly presented the latest Hungarian demographic and vital statistics data, but also touched upon the EU trends.

For the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, cooperation with higher education institutions is of particular importance for statistical education, the dissemination and development of statistical culture, data skills, the deepening of analytical skills and the strengthening of professional dialogue.
