Notification of the balance and debt of the general government sector (1st EDP notification of 2024)

The deficit of the general government sector in Hungary, in 2023, was HUF 5 018 billion, 6.7% of GDP based on preliminary data of the national accounts. According to data produced in compliance with the methodological requirements of the system of national accounts (ESA 2010), the revenue of the general government sector was HUF 31 814 billion and its expenditure HUF 36 832 billion. Compared to 2022 revenues increased by 12.9%, expenditures grew by 14.1%.

The debt of the general government sector at the end of 2023 – based on data of the National Bank of Hungary – was HUF 55 134 billion, 73.5% of GDP. Deficit and debt data correspond with those issued in the First Release entitled Balance of general government sector, year 2023 and 4th quarter of 2023, published on 2 April 2024.

HCSO reported the data to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the EU, in compliance with the Regulation on the excessive deficit procedure (EDP), according to the methodological requirements of the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010).
