Volume change in industrial production in the Member States of the European Union, January 2026

The volume of industrial production, based on calendar adjusted data, lessened by 0.6% in the European Union in January 2026, year-on-year. The largest setbacks (14.9% and 13.1%) occurred in Luxembourg and Ireland. Still, industrial output was larger in the majority of the member states compared to the previous year, the largest increases (13.3% and 11.5%) % taking place in Latvia and Denmark.
Based on calendar adjusted data the January 2026 production volume in industry was above the one year earlier level by 0.3% in Hungary1. Considering the Visegrad countries industrial performance grew in Czechia and Slovakia, by 2.8% and 2.6%, and lessened by 0.9% in Poland.
Industrial output increased by 1.5% in Hungary, and lessened by 1.6% in the EU as a whole compared to the previous month. The performance of Ireland fell the most, (by 9.8%) and grew most of all in Portugal (by 4.2%) among the member states.
Based on unadjusted data the volume of the January 2026 industrial production lagged behind the one year earlier level by 2.5% in Hungary. Production volume decreased in the majority of the manufacturing subsections (between 0.2%–32.9%), most of all in coke production and petroleum refining. Vehicle production volume, accounting for 26% of manufacturing output lessened by 0.2%. Among the two other large weight representing subsections a –5.3% volume setback occurred in the food industry, at the same time the manufacture of transport equipment registered a 17.4% increase year-on-year. The 10% manufacturing weight carrying manufacture of electrical equipment surpassed the low base of January 2025 by 10.4%.
According to the prognosis of Trading Economics2 industrial production is going to grow in Hungary, quarterly by 1.8%–3.5%, year-on-year, in the period between the 1st and 4th quarters of 2026.
