Volume change in construction output in the member states of the European Union, April 2025

Output volume of construction in the European Union was 1.4% higher in April 2025 than in the previous month and surpassed the April 2024 level by 2.5%. Compared to the latter, based on available working day adjusted data, production volume increased in the majority of the member states, however lessened in one of the decisive member states in construction: France, as did in three out of the four Visegrad countries, including Hungary. Production decreased by 0.5% in Hungary, by 4.3% in Poland, by 2.1% in Slovakia while Czechia registered a 1.9% growth.

The performance of construction in Hungary, based on raw data, lagged behind the April of the previous year’s data by 0.5% in April 2025, in contrast, surpassed the previous month’s level by 5.3% according to seasonally and working day adjusted data. Overall, production volume in the first four months of the year was 4.3% lower compared to the same period of the previous year.

The output of the two main construction groups took opposite directions in April, year-on-year: the construction of buildings lessened by 5.7%, civil engineering grew by 6.5%. (Elements of transport infrastructure and complex industrial facilities belong to the latter.) Among the divisions of construction, he largest weight representing specialised construction registered a 2.3% increase, the construction of buildings lessened by 5.3%. Production volume in civil engineering works was 1.0% higher than a year earlier. The volume of new contracts concluded fell by 12.7% compared to the high base of the previous year. The volume of the end of April stock of contracts at construction enterprises was 7.3% higher year-on-year, within it contracts for the construction of buildings lessened by 8.4%, those for civil engineering grew by 20.9%.

Based on the Euroconstruct estimate construction performance may increase annually in Hungary by 1.7% in 2025, by 2.9% in 2026. In Germany, Italy, Austria, however, a decline is expected in 2025, too.
