Nearly 90% of passenger cars advertised on the used car market are worth less than HUF 10 million
Figure 1
In the domestic used car market in September 2025, the distribution of advertisements by price range was as follows: 38.3% of the passenger cars offered were worth less than HUF 2.5 million, 26.8% were worth between HUF 2.5–5 million, 21.6% belonged to the price category of HUF 5–10 million, and 13.4% were above HUF 10 million. Compared to September 2024, the share of ads offering a car for less than HUF 2.5 million decreased by 3.4 percentage points, while the share of ads for between HUF 2.5 and 5 million increased by 0.8 percentage points. Compared to the same period last year, the share of ads between HUF 5–10 million increased by 2.3 percentage points and the share of ads above HUF 10 million increased by more than 0.3 percentage points. Taking all ads into account, the average asking price was HUF 5,600,000 in September this year and HUF 5,400,000 in the same period of the previous year.
Petrol cars account for almost half of the used car market
Figure 2
According to advertisements on the internet market for second-hand cars in September, almost 50% (53,730 units) of the cars offered were petrol cars and 40.9% (44,460 units) were diesel cars. Hybrid vehicles (petrol and diesel combined) accounted for 4.1% (4,520 units), electric for 5.3% (5,710 units) and other1 vehicles for 0.2% (250 units). Compared to September 2024, there were 690 fewer used cars available. Compared to the same period last year, the number of electric cars in the selection of Használtautó.hu increased by 33.4%, hybrid cars by 4.4%, while that of other types of propulsion increased by 4.2%. In addition, the number of petrol cars decreased by 0.7% and that of diesel cars by 1.3%.
Diesel cars covered on average more than 40% more kilometres than petrol cars
Figure 3
There is a positive relationship between the age of used cars and the number of kilometres driven. In terms of mileage, there is a large difference between the two main fuel types. The average mileage of advertised petrol cars was 155,000 km and that of diesel cars 220,000 km, i.e. diesel cars covered 41.9% more kilometres than petrol cars. The average age of the advertised petrol cars was 13.9 years and that of the diesel cars 12.2 years. The number of kilometres driven by petrol and diesel cars advertised in September grew by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively compared to the same period in the previous year. The average age of diesel passenger cars increased by 1.7% over a year, while stagnation was observed for petrol cars.
Hybrid cars are currently the most expensive on the used car market
Figure 4
Looking at the average price of used cars by drive system, we see that hybrid cars are currently the most expensive on the market (average price in September 2025: HUF 12,060,000), with a 0.3% decrease in one year. In contrast, the price of electric vehicles has fallen by 7.1% in one year. The price of petrol and diesel cars changed at similar rates over the period under review, with average prices close to each other. Diesel cars were 5.7% more expensive than petrol cars on average in the months observed. Of the five categories observed, vehicles in the other categories were the cheapest.
The data for the month of September show that several factors influence the price of used cars.2
All other things being equal, a petrol car loses 6.9% of its value every year, while a diesel car loses 7.8%. The average annual price decrease is 8.0% for electric cars, 6.3% for hybrids and 6.0% for other passenger cars.
Every thousand kilometres driven reduces the price of a car by 0.2%.
While a 100 cc increase in displacement increases the value of a car by 3.3%, a 10 kW increase in power increases the value by 3.7%.
Compared to cars in normal condition, those in excellent condition are on average 22.9% more expensive, those in spared condition 12.0% more expensive, those in undamaged condition 20.7% more expensive and those in nearly new condition 25.4% more expensive than the benchmark. The price of damaged, faulty cars is on average 59.7% lower on the same benchmark.
Volkswagen brand cars remain the most frequently advertised
Figure 5
The ranking of the 10 most popular brands showed relative stability during the period under review. Since January 2024, there has been a longer-term decline in the number of advertisements among brands, but a slight increase has been observed since January 2025. Volkswagen had the most ads in September, with more than 7,000, leading the ranking, followed by BMW with approximately 6,400. Ford took the 3rd place, while Opel occupied the 4th position, with nearly identical volumes of around 6,000 cases. Mercedes-Benz was in 5th place with over 5,500 ads, followed by Audi with over 4,700. The ranking of Škoda, Toyota, and Renault has remained unchanged for months, with these brands listed in September with between 2,900 and 3,700 advertisements. The last place, as in the previous month, was taken by Kia, whose number of ads was close to 2,500.
The average age of the 10 most popular brands is 11.8 years
Figure 6
The age of the cars belonging to the 10 most popular brands shows a slow but consistent long-term increase, however, a short-term decrease is observed during the period under review. Opel, Renault, and Volkswagen cars have the oldest average age, which ranged between 12.7–13.8 years in September. They are followed by Ford and Mercedes-Benz at 12.1–12.3 years, then Toyota and Audi, which are on average 11.6–11.9 years old. Based on September data, the last three brands are well-separated by average age: BMW at more than 10.8 years, Škoda at approximately 10.1, and finally the youngest player, Kia, at 10.0 years in the Használtautó.hu database.
The 10 most popular brands have an average asking price of HUF 5,840,000
Figure 7
The average asking price of the 10 brands with the most used car ads on Használtautó.hu shows stability. The quality differences between the brands are clearly visible. The three large German premium brands – Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi – lead the order in terms of average asking price by a wide margin. They are followed by more everyday brands: Kia, Toyota, Škoda, and Volkswagen in a group around HUF 4.6–5.2 million, Ford is slightly behind under HUF 4,000,000, and finally, Renault and Opel represent the last group with values under HUF 3,000,000.
Audi A6 has the highest average price among the most popular car models
Figure 8
Of the 10 most popular models advertised on Használtautó.hu in September, the Audi A6 had the highest average price (HUF 7,020,000) and the Suzuki Swift the lowest (HUF 1,630,000). In terms of age, the Kia Ceed was the youngest on average, at 8.7 years, and the Suzuki Swift the oldest, at nearly 17.7 years. For the 10 most common models, no correlation between average price and average age is observed this month.
Compared to the September 2024 ranking, there were 5 changes in the ranking of the 10 most frequently advertised models in the same period of 2025, which is summarized in the table below:
