Nearly 90% of passenger cars advertised on the used car market are worth less than HUF 10 million

Figure 1

In January 2026, the distribution of advertisements by price range on the domestic used car market was as follows: 35.6% of the passenger cars offered were worth less than HUF 2.5 million, 28.9% were in the HUF 2.5–5 million range, 23.4% belonged to the HUF 5–10 million price category, while 12.2% were advertised at prices above HUF 10 million. Compared to January 2025, the share of ads offering a car for less than HUF 2.5 million decreased by 5.0 percentage points, while the proportion of ads in the HUF 2.5–5 million range increased by 1.9 percentage points. In addition, compared to the same period last year, the share of ads in the HUF 5–10 million category also rose by 3.2 percentage points, while the proportion of advertisements above HUF 10 million fell slightly, by 0.1 percentage point. Taking all ads into account, the average asking price this January was HUF 5,600,000, compared with HUF 5,500,000 in the same period of the previous year.

Petrol cars account for nearly half of the used car market

Figure 2

According to online advertisements in January, almost half of the used cars offered (50,040 units, or nearly 50%) were petrol‑powered, while 41.0% (42,250 units) were diesel‑powered. Hybrid vehicles (petrol and diesel combined) accounted for 4.8% (4,920 units), electric cars for 5.4% (5,610 units), and other1 types for 0.2% (230 units). Compared to January 2025, 1,530 fewer used cars were available. Relative to the same period last year, the number of electric cars on Használtautó.hu increased by 23.3%, hybrids by 15.5%, and other propulsion types by 9.5%. Meanwhile, the number of petrol cars decreased by 1.9% and diesel cars by 5.1%.

Diesel cars covered on average nearly 43% more kilometres than petrol cars

Figure 3

There is a positive relationship between the age of used cars and the number of kilometres driven. In terms of mileage, there is a significant difference between the two main fuel types. The average mileage of advertised petrol cars was 152,000 km, while diesel cars had covered 218,000 km on average — meaning diesel vehicles had driven 43.4% more kilometres than petrol ones. The average age of petrol cars in the advertisements was 13.3 years, compared with 12.1 years for diesel cars. The number of kilometres driven decreased for both fuel types compared to the same period of the previous year: by 2.6% for petrol cars and by 0.9% for diesel cars. The average age of petrol passenger cars fell by 3.6% over a year, while the average age of diesel cars stagnated.

Hybrids are once again the most expensive vehicles on the used car market

Figure 4

Examining the average prices of used cars by drive system, hybrids and electric vehicles currently show nearly identical average asking prices: in January 2026, hybrids were offered at an average of HUF 11,400,000, while electric cars averaged HUF 10,980,000. For hybrids, this represented a 6.7% year‑on‑year decline, while for electric cars the decrease was 11.2%. Over the period observed, the prices of petrol and diesel passenger cars changed at similar rates, with average prices close to each other. During the months examined, diesel cars were on average 5.5% more expensive than petrol cars. Of the five categories observed, vehicles in the “other” category were the cheapest.

Several factors influence the price of used cars, based on January data2

All other things being equal, a petrol car loses 6.9% of its value each year, while a diesel car loses 7.7%. The average annual price decrease is 7.7% for electric cars, 5.9% for hybrids, and 6.4% for other passenger cars.

Every thousand kilometres driven reduces a car’s price by 0.2%.

While a 100 cc increase in engine displacement raises a car’s value by 3.4%, a 10 kW increase in power increases it by 3.7%.

Compared to cars in normal condition, those in spared condition are on average 9.2% more expensive, undamaged cars 17.1% more expensive, excellent‑condition cars 19.0% more expensive, and nearly new cars 20.8% more expensive. The price of damaged or faulty cars is on average 60.6% lower on the same basis.

Volkswagen continues to lead the list of advertised car brands

Figure 5

During the period under review, the ranking of the 10 most popular brands showed relative stability. Since January 2024, a persistent downward trend has been observed in the number of advertisements across brands; however, from January 2026 a slight increase appeared. In January, Volkswagen had the highest number of advertisements, leading the ranking with between 7,300 and 7,600 cases. At the end of the month, a change occurred between second and third place: BMW overtook Ford, with both brands having between 5,800 and 6,100 advertisements. No further changes took place in the remaining positions in January. Opel ranked 4th with 5,600–6,000 ads, followed by Mercedes‑Benz in 5th place with 5,200–5,500. Audi occupied 6th place with 4,600–4,800 ads, while Toyota ranked 7th with 3,600–3,800. Škoda finished 8th with 3,400–3,700 ads, Renault 9th with 2,700–3,000, and finally Kia closed the top‑ten list with 2,600–2,700 advertisements in the Használtautó.hu database.

Figure 6

In the long term, the age of cars belonging to the 10 most popular brands shows a slow but consistent increase; however, in the short term, a decrease was observed during the period under review. Opel, Renault, and Volkswagen cars had the oldest average age, ranging between 12.4 and 13.4 years in January. They were followed by Ford and Mercedes‑Benz at 11.6–12.0 years, then Audi and Toyota, which were on average 10.9–11.5 years old. Based on January data, the last three brands are well separated by average age: BMW at approximately 10.8 years, Škoda at around 9.9 years, and finally the youngest brand, Kia, at roughly 9.0 years.

Figure 7

A Használtautó.hu-n a legtöbb használtautó-hirdetéssel rendelkező 10 márka kínálati átlagára stabilitást mutat. Jól kirajzolódnak a márkák közötti minőségbeli különbségek.

Figure 8

Among the 10 most popular models advertised on Használtautó.hu in January, the Audi A6 had the highest average price (HUF 7,310,000), while the Suzuki Swift had the lowest (HUF 1,930,000). In terms of age, the Kia Ceed was the youngest on average at 9.5 years, while the Suzuki Swift was the oldest at nearly 17.0 years. This month, no correlation was observed between average price and average age among the 10 most common models.

Compared to January 2025, there were seven changes in the ranking of the 10 most frequently advertised models in January 2026, which is summarised in the table below:

Table 1

The 10 most common car models in January 2025 and in January 2026

5. Ford Mondeo Audi A6
6. Kia Ceed Toyota Yaris

  1. The other category includes petrol/gas, diesel/gas, LPG, CNG, hydrogen/electric, ethanol and other passenger cars.

  2. Linear regression was used for modelling, with the logarithm of the supply price as the dependent variable. The explanatory power of the model is 82.6%, and car brands were included in the estimation.
