Nearly 90% of passenger cars advertised on the used car market are worth less than HUF 10 million

In April 2026, the distribution of advertisements by price range on the domestic used car market was as follows: 35.6% of the passenger cars offered were worth less than HUF 2.5 million, 29.2% fell into the HUF 2.5–5 million range, 23.3% belonged to the HUF 5–10 million category, while 12.0% were advertised at prices above HUF 10 million. Compared with April 2025, the share of ads offering a car for less than HUF 2.5 million decreased by 5.0 percentage points, while the proportion of ads in the HUF 2.5–5 million range increased by 2.4 percentage points. The share of ads in the HUF 5–10 million category also rose, by 2.7 percentage points, while the proportion of advertisements above HUF 10 million declined slightly, by 0.1 percentage point. Taking all ads into account, the average asking price this April was HUF 5,540,000, compared with HUF 5,420,000 in the same period of the previous year.

Petrol cars account for nearly half of the used car market

According to online advertisements in April, nearly half of the used cars offered (55,340 units, close to 50%) were petrol powered, while 42.1% (48,370 units) were diesel powered. Hybrid vehicles (petrol and diesel combined) accounted for 4.8% (5,500 units), electric cars for 4.7% (5,400 units), and other1 fuel types for 0.2% (260 units). Compared with April 2025, 5,440 more used cars were available. Relative to the same period last year, the number of hybrid cars on Használtautó.hu by 32.2%, electric cars increased by 2.3%, other propulsion types decreased by 3.7%. In parallel, the number of petrol cars grew by 3.7%, and diesel cars by 4.4%.

Diesel cars covered on average nearly 44% more kilometres than petrol cars

There is a positive relationship between the age of used cars and the number of kilometres driven. In terms of mileage, a significant difference can be observed between the two main fuel types. The average mileage of advertised petrol cars was 153,000 km, while diesel cars had covered 220,000 km on average — meaning diesel vehicles had driven 43.8% more kilometres than petrol ones. The average age of petrol cars in the advertisements was 13.4 years, compared with 12.3 years for diesel cars. In April, the mileage of both petrol and diesel vehicles decreased: by 3.2% for petrol cars and by 1.3% for diesel cars compared to the same period of the previous year. In parallel, the average age of cars also improved, with petrol models 5.0% younger and diesel models stagnated year on year.

Electric cars are once again the most expensive vehicles on the used car market

Examining the average prices of used cars by drive system, we observe that the gap between hybrids and electric vehicles has narrowed: in April 2026, hybrids were offered at an average of HUF 11,070,000, while electric cars averaged HUF 11,480,000. For hybrids, this represented a 10.8% year‑on‑year decline, while for electric cars the decrease was 2.0%. Over the period observed, the prices of petrol and diesel passenger cars changed at similar rates, with average prices close to each other. During the months examined, diesel cars were on average 5.1% more expensive than petrol cars. Of the five categories observed, vehicles in the “other” category were the cheapest.

Several factors influenced the price of used cars, based on April data.2

All other things being equal, a petrol car loses 6.9% of its value each year, while a diesel car loses 7.7%. The average annual price decrease is 5.8% for hybrids, 8.1% for electric cars, and 6.2% for other passenger cars.

Every thousand kilometres driven reduces a car’s price by 0.2%.

While a 100 cc increase in engine displacement raises a car’s value by 3.4%, a 10 kW increase in power increases it by 3.6%.

Compared to cars in normal condition, those in spared condition are on average 10.7% more expensive, undamaged cars 17.3% more expensive, excellent condition cars 20.5% more expensive, and nearly new cars 21.6% more expensive. The price of damaged or faulty cars is on average 58.7% lower on the same basis.

Volkswagen continues to lead the list of advertised car brands

During the period under review, the ranking of the 10 most popular car brands showed relative stability. Since January 2024, there has been a longer-term decline in the number of advertisements among brands, but an increased has been observed since January 2025. In April 2026, Volkswagen had the highest number of advertisements, leading the ranking with 7,500–7,700 cases. BMW ranked second with 6,400–6,500 ads, followed by Ford in third place with 6,100–6,300. Infourth place stood Opel, followed by Mercedes‑Benz in fifth; both brands closed the month with 5,700–6,000 advertisements. Audi occupied sixth place with 4,900–5,000 ads, while Toyota ranked seventh with 3,800–4,000. Škoda finished eighth with around 3,700–3,900 ads, Renault ninth with 2,800–2,900, and finally Kia closed the top‑ten list with 2,600–2,800 advertisements in the Használtautó.hu database. No changes occurred in the ranking compared with the previous month.

In the long term, the age of cars belonging to the 10 most popular brands shows a slow but consistent increase; however, in the short term, a decrease was observed during the period under review. In April, Opel, Renault and Volkswagen cars had the oldest average age, ranging between 12.7 and 13.6 years. They were followed by Ford and Mercedes‑Benz, with average ages of 11.9–12.0 years, then by Audi and Toyota, averaging 11.2–11.7 years. Based on April data, the last three brands are clearly separated by average age: BMW at approximately 11.0 years, Škoda at around 10.0 years, and finally the youngest brand, Kia, at roughly 9.1 years.

The average listing prices of the ten brands with the highest number of used car advertisements on Használtautó.hu have remained broadly stable. Clear quality differentials emerge across the brands. The three major German premium manufacturers — Mercedes‑Benz, BMW and Audi — stand distinctly at the top of the ranking. They are followed by a cluster of more mainstream brands: Toyota, Kia, Škoda and Volkswagen, all positioned in the HUF 4.7–5.3 million price range. Ford trails this group slightly, with average listings around HUF 4,050,000. Finally, Renault and Opel form the lowest tier, with typical prices ranging between HUF 2.6 million and HUF 3.1 million.

Among the 10 most popular car models advertised on Használtautó.hu in April, the Audi A6 had the highest average price (HUF 6,490,000), while the Suzuki Swift had the lowest (HUF 1,860,000). In terms of age, the Kia Ceed was the youngest on average at 9.1 years, while the Suzuki Swift was the oldest at nearly 17.6 years. This month, no correlation was observed between average price and average age among the 10 most common models.

Compared to April 2025, six changes occurred in the ranking of the 10 most frequently advertised models in April 2026, summarised in the table below:

The Kia Ceed moved up from 6th to 4th place in one year, the Toyota Yaris from 14th to 6th, and the Opel Astra J from 10th to 9th. However, the Audi A6 fell from 4th to 5th place, the Ford Mondeo from 5th to 8th, and the Ford Fiesta from 9th to 10th.

Average asking prices increased among the 10 most popular models, with the Suzuki Swift showing the largest rise, up by 25.7% in one year. When analysing vehicle age, all 10 models were younger than in the same period of the previous year, with the steepest decline recorded for the Toyota Yaris, down by 18.3%.
