Number of tourist arrivals (1.0 million) up 14% year-on-year and tourism nights (2.3 million) up 3.9%

In February 2025, 1.0 million guests spent 2.3 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of tourist arrivals was 14% and that of tourism nights 3.9% higher than a year earlier. In January-February 2025, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation by domestic guests was 0.7% lower than in the same period of the previous year, while that of international guests was 12% higher.

In February 2025:

Overall, the number of tourist arrivals and of tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments rose by 14% and 3.9%, respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals expanded by 8.9% and that of tourism nights by 2.7% compared to February 2024. 73% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where the number of nights was 3.2% higher than in the same month of the previous year. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 5.7% more tourism nights than a year earlier.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals and of domestic tourism nights were 5.4% higher and 2.1% lower respectively than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals grew by 3.6% and that of domestic tourism nights decreased by 1.1% compared to February 2024. The 485 thousand domestic guests spent 1.0 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 383 thousand tourist arrivals and 792 thousand tourism nights. 83% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 1.2% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was 5.6% lower than in February 2024. Compared to the same month last year, the number of international tourism nights in the Szeged region increased the most (by 7.9%), while the largest decrease was recorded in the Pécs region (by 18%). The number of domestic tourism nights in tourist accommodation was 0.1% lower at Lake Balaton and 0.6% lower in Budapest.

The number of international tourist arrivals was up by 22% and that of international tourism nights by 9.0% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals grew by 18% and that of international tourism nights by 7.5% compared to February 2024. The 536 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.3 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 365 thousand tourist arrivals and 903 thousand tourism nights. 86% of the latter were at hotels, where the number of nights spent by international tourists was 8.6% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments increased by 13% compared to February 2024. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of international tourism nights increased the most (by 25%) in the Pécs region and decreased the most (by 15%) in the Sopron region. In Budapest and at Lake Balaton, the number of international tourism nights registered in tourist accommodation increased by both 12%.

A total of 18,964 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,039 commercial and 16,925 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.

Of commercial accommodation establishments, 896 hotels and 876 boarding houses were open for part or all of February.

The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 59.8 billion, 17% more at current prices than a year earlier.

Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 2.0 billion, 1.2% more at current prices compared to the same month of the previous year, at tourist accommodation establishments.

In January-February 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year:

Tourist accommodation establishments recorded a total of nearly 4.6 million tourism nights, up 6.2%.

Domestic guests spent 0.7% fewer tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments and international guests 12% more (2.0 million and 2.6 million respectively).
