1.0 million guests spent nearly 2.3 million tourism nights
In January 2025, 1.0 million guests spent nearly 2.3 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of tourist arrivals was 18% and that of tourism nights 8.7% higher than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by domestic guests was 0.8% and that of international tourism nights 16% higher than in January 2024.

Overall, the number of tourist arrivals and of tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments rose by 18% and 8.7%, respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals expanded by 12% and that of tourism nights by 6.0% compared to January 2024. 72% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where the number of nights was 6.7% higher than in the same month of the previous year. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 14% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals and of domestic tourism nights were 7.2% and 0.8% higher respectively than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals grew by 4.3% and that of domestic tourism nights by 1.2% compared to January 2024. The 473 thousand domestic guests spent 995 thousand tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 370 thousand tourist arrivals and 775 thousand tourism nights. 83% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 2.0% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was 1.6% higher than in January 2024. The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased most in the Gyula region (by 16%), while the largest decrease was recorded in the Sopron tourism area2 (by 3.9%). The number of domestic tourism nights increased to the highest extent (by 22%) in the Győr and Pannonhalma tourism area and went down the most (by 11%) in the Greater Budapest area compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The number of domestic tourist arrivals and tourism nights registered in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 10% and 4.2% respectively at Lake Balaton and by 14% and 1.3% in Budapest.
The number of international tourist arrivals was up by 29% and that of international tourism nights by 16% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals grew by 28% and that of international tourism nights by 15% compared to January 2024. The 541 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent almost 1.3 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 363 thousand tourist arrivals and 870 thousand tourism nights. 86% of the latter were at hotels, where the number of nights spent by international tourists was 16% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments increased by 23% compared to January 2024. The number of foreign tourist arrivals increased in all tourism areas, with the highest increase in the Gyula region (50%) and the lowest in the Bük-Sárvár tourism area (16%). The number of international tourism nights rose the most markedly (by 45%) in the Gyula region, while among the tourism areas, only the Greater Budapest region decreased (by 7.1%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of international tourist arrivals and tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 31% and 18% respectively in Budapest and by 32% and 15% at Lake Balaton.
A total of 20,565 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,088 commercial and 18,477 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 918 hotels and 892 boarding houses were open for part or all of January.
The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 61.5 billion, 21% more at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 2.2 billion, 2.6% less at current prices compared to the same month of the previous year, at tourist accommodation establishments.
