Number of tourism nights 8.4% and that of tourist arrivals 11% higher than a year earlier
In December 2024, nearly 1.3 million guests spent 2.9 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of tourist arrivals was 11% and that of tourism nights 8.4% higher than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by domestic guests was 0.6% and that of international tourism nights 15% higher than in December 2023. In 2024, there were 5.8% more tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments than in the previous year.

Overall, the number of tourist arrivals at and of tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments rose by 11% and 8.4%, respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals expanded by 8.5% and that of tourism nights by 5.4% compared to December 2023. 71% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where the number of nights was 5.4% higher than in the same month of the previous year. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 17% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals and of domestic tourism nights were both 0.6% higher than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals grew by 4.3% and that of domestic tourism nights lessened by 0.1% compared to December 2023. The 544 thousand domestic guests spent 1.2 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 419 thousand tourist arrivals and 922 thousand tourism nights. 82% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 2.4% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was 2.2% higher than in December 2023. The number of domestic tourism nights increased to the highest extent (by 14%) in the Győr and Pannonhalma tourism area2 and went down the most (by 8.0%) in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza area compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments was 1.6% larger in Budapest and 2.8% smaller at Lake Balaton.
The number of international tourist arrivals was up by 20% and that of international tourism nights by 15% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals grew by 19% and that of international tourism nights by 12% compared to December 2023. The 715 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.7 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 472 thousand tourist arrivals and almost 1.2 million tourism nights. 87% of the latter were at hotels, where the number of nights spent by international tourists was 12% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments increased by 25% compared to December 2023. The number of international tourism nights rose the most markedly (by 33%) in the Pécs region and fell the most (by 22%) in Gyula region compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of international tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments augmented by 19% in Budapest and lessened by 0.8% at Lake Balaton.
A total of 22,206 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,149 commercial and 20,057 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 922 hotels and 924 boarding houses were open for part or all of December.
The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 90 billion, 22% more at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend some HUF 2.9 billion, 8.2% more at current prices compared to the same month of the previous year, at tourist accommodation establishments.

Tourist accommodation establishments registered 5.8% more, a total of 44.2 million tourism nights.
Domestic guests spent 2.0% and international ones 9.9% more (respective 22.0 million and 22.2 million) tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments.
