The number of tourism nights exceeded the previous year by 8.5% and that of tourist arrivals by 15%

In October 2024, nearly 1.5 million guests spent 3.4 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of arrivals surpassed the previous year by 15% and that of tourism nights by 8.5%. The number of nights spent by domestic guests exceeded October 2023 by 4.2% partly due to the autumn school holidays, which this year mainly fell in October, and those spent by international guests by 13%. In January-October 2024, domestic guests spent 1.9% and international guests 9.0% more tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.

In October 2024:

Overall, the number of arrivals and tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments grew by 15% and 8.5% respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals increased by 15% and that of tourism nights by 7.6% compared to October 2023. 71% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 5.7% higher than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 16% more tourism nights than a year earlier.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 8.2% and that of domestic tourism nights by 4.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals increased by 6.2% and domestic tourism nights by 3.3% compared to October 2023. 738 thousand domestic guests spent 1.6 million tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 540 thousand tourist arrivals and nearly 1.2 million tourism nights. 78% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 7.8% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 7.2% compared to October 2023. The number of domestic tourism nights increased the most in the Szeged region2 (by 17%) and decreased only in the Gyula region (by 1.9%). The number of nights spent by domestic guests in tourist accommodation increased by 6.7% at Lake Balaton and by 0.8% in Budapest.

The number of international arrivals increased by 23% and international tourism nights by 13% compared to the same month last year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals increased by 24% and international tourism nights by 12% compared to October 2023. The 740 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.8 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 522 thousand guests and almost 1.3 million tourism nights, respectively. 85% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of international tourism nights was 11% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 24% compared to October 2023. The number of international tourism nights increased most in the Gyula region (by 20%), while the Greater Budapest tourism area saw the largest decrease (by 11%) compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of international tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 16% at Lake Balaton and by 15% in Budapest, the latter increase being also driven by major sporting events in the capital.

A total of 24,613 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,479 commercial and 22,134 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.

Of commercial accommodation establishments, 961 hotels and 1,070 boarding houses were open for part or all of October.

The total gross sales revenues of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 91 billion, which was 21% higher at current prices than a year earlier.

Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 2.9 billion, 14% more at current prices, at tourist accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year.

In January-October 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year:

Tourist accommodation establishments registered a total of nearly 38.5 million tourism nights, up 5.3%.

Domestic guests and international guests spent 1.9% and 9.0% more tourism nights respectively (19.5 million and 18.9 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
