The number of tourism nights increased by 3.6% and that of tourist arrivals by 11% compared to a year earlier
In August 2024, 2.6 million guests spent 7.0 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of arrivals was 11% and tourism nights 3.6% higher than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by domestic guests grew by 3.7% and international tourism nights by 3.5%. In January-August 2024, domestic guests spent 2.4% and international guests 9.1% more tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.

Overall, the number of arrivals and tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments grew by 11% and 3.6% respectively. 62% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 1.5% higher than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 7.2% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 9.2% and that of domestic tourism nights by 3.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. 1.4 million domestic guests spent 3.9 million tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 915 thousand tourist arrivals and 2.4 million tourism nights. 61% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 5.5% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 6.1% compared to August 2023. The number of domestic tourism nights increased the most in the Szeged region (by 12%) and decreased the most in the Pécs tourism area2 (by 7.2%) compared to the same period last year. The number of nights spent by domestic guests in tourist accommodation increased by 7.3% in Budapest and by 5.6% at Lake Balaton.
The number of international arrivals increased by 14% and international tourism nights by 3.5% compared to the same month last year. The nearly 1.2 million international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 3.0 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 786 thousand guests and 1.9 million tourism nights, respectively. 69% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of international tourism nights was 4.7% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 8.8% compared to August 2023. The number of international tourism nights increased most in the Gyula region (by 12%), while the Greater Budapest tourism area saw the largest decrease (by 14%) compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of international tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 9.2% in Budapest and fell by 1.4% at Lake Balaton.
A total of 37,333 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,972 commercial and 34,361 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 1,014 hotels and 1,169 boarding houses were open for part or all of August.
The total gross sales revenues of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 140 billion, which was 8.5% higher at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 7.5 billion, 14% more at current prices, at tourist accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year.

Tourist accommodation establishments registered a total of almost 31.5 million tourism nights, up 5.5%.
Domestic guests and international guests spent 2.4% and 9.1% more tourism nights respectively (16.3 million and 15.1 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
