According to preliminary data, 6,708 children were born and 9,697 people died in September 2024. The number of births lessened by 7.7% and that of marriages by 22%, while the number of deaths increased by 5.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In September 2024:
A total of 6,708 children were born, 7.7% or 558 fewer than in September 2023.
9,697 people lost their lives, 5.4% or 493 more than a year earlier.
The natural decrease was 2,989, as opposed to 1,938 in September 2023.
5,417 couples got married, which was 22% or 1,531 less than a year earlier.
In January–September 2024:
58,220 children were born, 6,526 or 10% less than in January–September 2023. Within this, the number of live births was 9.1% lower in January–March, 3.3% lower in April and 12% lower in May–September than in the same periods of 2023.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.39 per female, which was 1.53 a year earlier.
There were 93,587 deaths, 0.2% less or 183 fewer than one year earlier. Compared to the same periods of the previous year, 1.1% more people died in January–February, 6.8% more in July–September, while 5.7% less people deceased in March–June than in the corresponding periods of the previous year.
Due to the balance of births and deaths, the natural decrease was 35,367 people, which was 22% more than the value of 29,024 for January–September 2023.
38,193 couples got married, 4.8% or 1,914 less than a year earlier. 27% more marriages were registered in January–February, 3.2% more in April–May and 1.9% more in August, but 1.9% less in March, 14% less in June–July and 22% less in September than in the corresponding periods of 2023.
There were 8.1 live births and 13.1 deaths per thousand population. The rate of live births was 0.9 per mille points lower, while that of deaths was almost the same as in January–September 2023. The rate of natural decrease increased by 0.9 per mille points to 4.9 per mille. The number of infant deaths was 4.0 per thousand live births, which was 1.0 per mille points more compared to the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 5.3 per mille, 0.3 per mille points lower than a year earlier.

The number of births declined in all regions compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest decreases occurred in Budapest, Western Transdanubia and Pest Region.
The number of deaths fell in Pest Region and in Central Transdanubia, remained stable in the Southern Great Plain, and rose in the other regions compared with the same period of the previous year. The largest decrease was in Pest Region, while the largest increase was in the Northern Great Plain.
The rate of natural decrease rose in all regions, with the largest growths in the capital, Pest Region and Western Transdanubia.
The number of marriages rose in half of the regions and fell in the other half. The largest increase occurred in Southern Transdanubia, Northern Hungary and Northern Great Plain, while the largest decreases in Budapest and Western Transdanubia.
