4 million 748 thousand people in employment, unemployment rate at 4.2%

In August 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 39 thousand to 4 million 748 thousand compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of unemployed persons was 210 thousand and the unemployment rate 4.2%.1

Employment, June–August 2024

In the June–August period 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 31 thousand to 4 million 752 thousand. The number of employed males decreased slightly,2 to 2 million 502 thousand, while that of females increased by 43 thousand to 2 million 250 thousand.

The domestic primary labour market employed 4 million 586 thousand people, 43 thousand more than a year earlier. While the number of people working abroad remained stable2 at 108 thousand, that of public workers fell by 10 thousand to 58 thousand.

The employment rate for 15-64 year olds grew by 0.4 percentage points2 to 75.2%. The rate decreased slightly2 for males to 78.9% and rose by 1.3 percentage points for females to 71.4%.

Unemployment, June–August 2024

In the June-August 2024 period, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 increased year-on-year by 12 thousand to 211 thousand, while the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.3%.

The number of unemployed males was 112 thousand, and their unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 4.3%. For females, the number of unemployed was 100 thousand, with an unemployment rate of 4.2%, essentially the same as a year earlier.

The average duration of job search was 9.8 months, and 40% of all unemployed people had been looking for a job for less than 3 months and 36% for at least a year.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service (https://nfsz.munka.hu/), the number of registered job seekers at the end of August 2024 decreased by 1.7% to 225 thousand compared to a year earlier.
