4 million 768 thousand people in employment, unemployment rate at 4.2%

In June 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 remained essentially unchanged compared to the same period of the previous year, at 4 million 768 thousand. The number of unemployed persons was 210 thousand and the unemployment rate was 4.2%.1

Employment, April–June 2024

In the period April–June 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15-74 was 4 million 745 thousand, 21 thousand more than a year earlier. For men, the number of employed decreased slightly (within the margin of sampling error) to 2 million 501 thousand, while for women it rose by 27 thousand to 2 million 244 thousand.

The domestic primary labour market employed 4 million 579 thousand people, 29 thousand more than a year earlier. While the number of people working abroad increased by a smaller amount (within the margin of sampling error) to 106 thousand, the number of public workers decreased by 12 thousand to 60 thousand.

Among 15-64 year olds, the employment rate grew by 0.3 percentage points to 75.1%. The rate remained essentially unchanged for men at 79.0%, while for women it increased by 0.7 percentage points to 71.2%.

Unemployment, April–June 2024

In the period April–June 2024, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 increased year-on-year by 23 thousand to 215 thousand persons, while the unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 4.3%.

For males, the number of unemployed was 114 thousand and their unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 4.4%. For females, the number of unemployed was 101 thousand and their unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 4.3%.

The average time spent looking for a job was 10.0 months, 35% of all unemployed had been looking for a job for less than 3 months and 36% for at least a year.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service (https://nfsz.munka.hu/), the number of registered jobseekers at the end of June 2024 decreased by 0.6% to 223 thousand compared to a year earlier.
