4 million 749 thousand people in employment, unemployment rate at 4.3%

In May 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 36 thousand from the same period of the previous year, to 4 million 749 thousand. The number of unemployed persons was 212 thousand and the unemployment rate was 4.3%1.

Employment, March–May 2024

In the period March–May 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15-74 was 4 million 745 thousand, 41 thousand more than a year earlier. For men, the number of employed persons was unchanged at 2 million 496 thousand, while for women it rose by 41 thousand to 2 million 249 thousand.

The domestic primary labour market employed 4 million 576 thousand people, 42 thousand more than a year earlier. While the number of people working abroad increased by a smaller amount (within the margin of error) to 108 thousand, the number of public workers decreased by 8 thousand to 61 thousand.

Among 15-64 year olds, the employment rate grew by 0.6 percentage points to 75.1. The rate remained essentially unchanged for men at 78.8%, while for women it increased by 1.2 percentage points to 71.4%.

Unemployment, March–May 2024

In the period March–May 2024, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 increased year-on-year by 27 thousand to 219 thousand persons, while the unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 4.4%.

For males, the number of unemployed was 120 thousand and their unemployment rate rose by 0.6 percentage points to 4.6%. For females, the number of unemployed was 99 thousand and their unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 4.2%.

The average time spent looking for a job was 9.8 months, 35% of all unemployed had been looking for a job for less than 3 months and 36% for at least a year.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service (https://nfsz.munka.hu/), the number of registered jobseekers at the end of May 2024 decreased by 1.2% to 226 thousand compared to a year earlier.
