How to use the search program?
Application
In the search program you will find 4 text-boxes to insert search words and terms in. The search box on top must always be completed. If you seek words, write 1 word to 1 box, if a term, then put the term into one box and other words to separate boxes.
Having inserted words into text-boxes, choose the relationship between them ('and' or 'or'). If completed, click on the search button.
If the program found documents, they will be displayed by ten items in two sections ('subscriber' and 'free'). If more than 10 documents have been found in one block, then you can check them by clicking on 'next 10 hit in subscriber section' or 'next 10 hit in free section' buttons.
In the free block such menu sheets may also appear, which contain the searched word or word-combinations, but sites may be accessible only for subscribers.
Advanced search
If you search for documents, which contain all given words, choose 'and' condition among text-boxes. The 'and' may be replaced by a '&' mark between words. The same is the situation in case of more than 4 searched words.
Example how to use 'and' condition: apple & pear & plum & tomato & Budapest
If you search for documents, in which any given words may figure, choose 'or' condition among words. The 'or' condition can be substituted by a | (vertical line) in between words.
Example how to use 'or' condition: apple | pear | plum | tomato | Budapest
If you search for documents, in which the given words should not appear, write an ~ (undulating line) before the second word
Example how to use 'negating' condition: apple ~ pear
In case of search for combined terms (when signs are indicated among words) it is advisable to use only the first text box. Mixed search: It is possible to make mixed search, where 'and' and 'or' and perhaps 'negation' are also a condition. In such cases it is advisable to use brackets to make search unambiguous.
Example how to use 'mixed search': If you are looking for pages dealing with apple and tomato, but exclusively on the territory of Budapest or Pest county, then the search formula will be as follows: apple & tomato & (Budapest | Pest county) ~ pear .
Use of substituting characters
If you wish to search for a part of a word (not full word), you can use % (percent) mark to replace a text, and _ (underlining) to replace one letter.
Examples:
The vers% word will find all possible solutions starting with this
syllable.
The f_nd word will find all variations that can be inserted into this word: e.g. find,
fund, fond.
The %one% word will find all expressions that include the syllable 'one', e.g. alone,
cone, oneself etc.
How to qualify "hit list"?
There are two ways to qualify search condition: by language (Hungarian or English version) and by category (Database, Tables, Publications, Questionnaires, HCSO organisation, Other).
All documents belong to a language version. In the "hit list" documents appear in accordance with the marked language on the search site. Normally the "Hungarian version" is crossed, in case a search is started from the Hungarian homepage, so documents in the hit list will be in Hungarian. If no language has been chosen, the search does not work.
All documents belong to any of the abovelisted categories. In the "hit list" you will find such documents, which have been marked by a cross on the search side. Normally the "Database, Tables" are marked. If no cross has been put to any categories, the search will fail. On the "hit list" an icon and a flying text, characteristic of the category, appear beside each document.
