More births and fewer deaths
In January–July 2020, the number of births was 4.9% more and that of deaths 5.1% less than in the corresponding period of 2019 according to preliminary data. As a result, the natural decrease declined by 23% or 6,480 compared to January–July 2019. In July 2020, the number of live births increased by 1.7% and that of deaths went down by 6.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. The natural decrease of 913 in July was 45% lower than a year earlier.
In July 2020:1
8,523 children were born, which was 145 or 1.7% more than in July 2019.
9,436 people lost their lives, which was 614 fewer or 6.1% less than a year earlier.
Due to the decline in the number of deaths and the rise in the number of births, the natural decrease over the month was 913 as opposed to 1,672 in July 2019, which was a decrease of 45%.
The number of marriages went down; 7,544 couples got married, 6.8% less or 547 fewer compared to July 2019.
In January–July 2020:
52,825 children were born, which was 2,488 or 4.9% more than the number of births in January–July 2019. Within this, the number of live births was 8.8% more in January–February and 2.3% more in March–May, 8.9% more in June and 1.7% more in July compared to the corresponding months of 2019.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.53 per female, compared with 1.44 for January–July 2019.
There were 74,093 deaths, 5.1% less or 3,992 fewer than one year earlier. 13% less people died in January–February and 1.8% more in March–April than a year earlier. Thereafter, the number of deaths fell again, by 0.7% in May, by 3.5% in June and by 6.1% in July.
As a result of the decline in the number of deaths and the rise in the number of births, the natural decrease was 21,268 as opposed to 27,748 in January–July 2019, which was a decline of 23%.
34,337 couples got married, which was 6.7% or 2,158 more marriages. 101% more marriages were registered in January–March and 8.9% more in April, while 26% less in May–June and 6.8% less in July than in the corresponding months of 2019. The lower growth in April and the later decrease may have been owing to restrictive measures on group events, introduced because of the Covid-19 epidemic.
There were 9.3 live births and 13.0 deaths per thousand population. The former was 0.4 per mille point higher and the latter 0.7 per mille point lower compared to the period of January–July 2019. As a result of all this, the 3.7 per mille rate of the natural decrease was 1.1 per mille points lower than one year earlier. The number of infant deaths was 3.7 per thousand live births in January–July 2020, which was a fall of 0.2 per mille point compared to January–July of the previous year. The marriage rate was 6.0 per mille, 0.4 per mille point more compared to the same period of 2019.
