Tourism nights at accommodation establishments increased by 1.6% in December and by 3.8% in 2018
In December 2018, the number of nights spent by international tourists grew by 0.9% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists by 2.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Total gross revenues grew by 6.7% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments.
In 2018, commercial accommodation establishments saw a 3.8% growth in tourism nights and a 9.3% rise in gross revenues compared to 2017.
In December 2018, compared to the same month of the previous year:
Both the number of international tourist arrivals and tourism nights increased by 0.9%. The number of guests arriving at accommodation establishments exceeded 390 thousand, spending more than 950 thousand nights. The number of tourism nights increased in hotels, boarding houses and camping sites, while it fell in community hostels and bungalows. More than three quarters of tourism nights were spent by foreigners in the Budapest-Central Danube Region, 1.6% more than in the same month of the previous year.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 1.0% and exceeded 430 thousand. The number of tourism nights they spent grew by 2.3% to more than 950 thousand. The rate of expansion was 2.5% in hotels realizing 81% of domestic tourism nights. With the exception of the regions of Northern Hungary and Southern Great Plain, domestic guests spent more nights in each tourist region. Budapest-Central Danube Region and Lake Balaton were the most popular regions.
Room occupancy in hotels increased by 0.4 percentage point to 52.0%.
The total gross revenue of accommodation establishments increased by 6.7% to HUF 38 billion at current prices; within this, accommodation fee revenues increased by 8.2% (to HUF 21 billion).
Széchenyi Recreation Card holders spent a total of more than HUF 1.2 billion, 5.1% less in commercial accommodation establishments.
On 31 December 2018, compared to the same date of the previous year:
2,633 commercial accommodation establishments were in operation with nearly 79 thousand available rooms and 219 thousand bed-places. The number of rooms grew by 3.1% and of bed-places by 3.2%.
In January–December 2018, compared to the same period of the previous year:
Commercial accommodation establishments registered a total of 12.5 million arrivals and 30.9 million tourism nights, up 5.2% and 3.8% respectively. Foreign guests spent 2.4% more (15.3 million) and domestic guests 5.3% more (15.6 million) nights.
Room occupancy in hotels increased by 2.0 percentage points to 61.3%.
Total gross sales in commercial accommodation establishments grew by 9.3% at current prices to a total of HUF 510 billion. Within this, accommodation revenues increased by 8.3% to HUF 301 billion.
