Characteristics of the international visitor-flow

Tourism: Travel flows for leisure purposes.

Visitor/Traveller: Any person who travels for any – non-locally remunerated – purposes and spend less than one year away from his/her primary domicile.

Tourism Categories: (traveller profiles according to the international practice)

	Same-day visitors: visitors, who spend less than 24 hours – therefore not having an overnight stay – in the place visited.
	Overnight visitors: travellers, who stay overnight in the place visited (more detailed classification: 1–3 nights – short duration, 4 or more nights – long duration)
Travel purposes (Motivations) Touristic purpose:
	Leisure purposes: recreation, round trip (to year-end 2007), sightseeing, hiking, visiting friends and relatives, spa/medical treatment, health preservation, visiting cultural and/or sport events, hunting, religious tours.
	Business tourism: conference, congress, business travels, attending meetings or fairs.
Non-touristic purpose:
	Shopping
	Working
	Transit: Such trip, whose main purpose is to do any activity in the territory of another country (not in Hungary)
	Others: studies, other travel purposes.

Main purpose of the visit: the major travel motivation behind the journey.

Foreign visitors in Hungary, Hungarian travelling abroad: as for air, rail, water and road transport, drivers are excluded. In case of internal EU border sections, the passenger and vehicle traffic data are estimated data. On 21 December 2007, at the internal Schengen borders, the exhaustive traffic count of the police, which provided basic populations to international and domestic demand side surveys, came to an end. At the affected border sections (Austrian, Slovak and Slovene) as well as at Ferihegy, after 1 January 2008 – for lack of the stopped release – the survey population was carried on by applying Eviews software, Trame/Seats methods and an ARIMA-model (time series extrapolation).

International travel receipts (export): foreign exchange receipts originating from international visitors (spent by foreigners in Hungary) figuring in the international balance of payments (based on the data of the National Bank of Hungary).

International travel expenditures (import): expenditures spent by Hungarians travelling abroad figuring in the international balance of payments (based on the data of the National Bank of Hungary).

International visitor spending: international leisure and business spending in Hungary as well as international travel costs with related commissions and other transferred fees.

Resident expenditures: international leisure and other expenditures – including fees transferred for international residents – of Hungarian residents.

• On 21 December 2007, at the Schengen internal borders, the registration of passengers and motor vehicle traffic came to an end, it provided a basic population for foreign and Hungarian demand side surveys. At the concerned border sections (Austrian, Slovak, Slovene) as well as at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, after 1 January 2010, the basic population of these surveys was further calculated with a piece of Eviews software, Tramo/Seats method by applying the ARIMA model (time series further calculation).
• Since 2011, the determination of arrival figures has been supplemented with the methods of SPSS software and linear regression, in which the underlying variables are data on external borders, dummy variables as well as other data deriving from the further calculation of the time series.
• Of financial transactions in connection with passenger traffic, in the accounting of the balance of payment, following the methodology of the International Monetary Fund the value of organized passenger transport services is accounted by the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) not at the travel item but as a stand alone item.
• Air, rail, water and road transport excluding lorry drivers. At the internal border crossings of EU, data on passenger and vehicle traffic are estimates.
