Description | One of the quality criteria for European statistics is comparability across countries. Comparable statistics are required for monitoring purposes (e.g., Principal European Economic Indicators), to calculate European aggregates, to benchmark national performances, to learn from one’s neighbours and to conduct comparative research. Providing good survey data is difficult. Providing good survey data that are comparable across countries is extremely difficult. In many cases there is a trade-off between quality criteria, e.g., between accuracy and timeliness, or between national best practices and comparability. Cross-national comparability may also be hampered by differences in cultural and national contexts, both substantive and methodological. |
