Sales of retail shops grew by 5.8%
In May 2021, the volume of sales in retail trade, according to both raw and calendar-adjusted data, grew by 5.8% compared to the same period last year. In May, calendar-adjusted sales volumes rose by 2.6% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 8.7% in non-food retail trade and by 9.7 in automotive fuel retailing compared with the same period a year earlier. In January–May 2021, the volume of sales – also according to calendar adjusted data – was 1.2% higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. Compared to May 2019 the volume of retail trade grew by 3.4% according to calendar adjusted data.

The volume of domestic retail sales increased by 5.8%.
The volume of sales increased by 2.6% in specialized and non-specialized food retailing. The volume of sales increased by 2.4% in non-specialized food and beverages shops accounting for 74% of food retailing and by 3.1% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.
The base effect – the gradual phasing out of shop closures in May last year - affected typically the non-food retail trade, which grew by 8.7% overall. Sales volumes rose by 60% in textiles, clothing and footwear shops, by 48% in second-hand goods shops, by 17% in pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics shops, by 13% in books, computer equipment and other specialized stores, and by 3.3% in non-specialized shops dealing in manufactured goods. Sales volumes fell in furniture and electrical goods stores (21%).
Mail order and internet retailing, which covers a wide range of goods and accounts for 9.2% of retail sales, continued to expand in volume, by 13%.
Sales volumes in automotive fuel stations increased by 9.7%.
Sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores not belonging to retail data increased by 18%.
In May 2021:
Domestic retail sales amounted to HUF 1,146 billion at current prices.
Specialized and non-specialized food shops accounted for 47% of all domestic retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail trade and retail trade of petrol stations were 38% and 15% respectively.

The volume of retail trade increased by 1.2%.
The volume of sales rose by 0.3% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 3.1% in non-food retail trade and by 1.6% in automotive fuel retail trade.
